What Is Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)?
NLP is composed of three distinct disciplines:
- Neurology: How we think and our physiology
- Linguistic: Language and how it affects us
- Programming: How we motivate ourselves to achieve our goals
In essence, NLP is about tapping into motivation, understanding behaviour change and how to produce excellent results. This may sound complex, but it is something that we all constantly do on a daily basis – whether it is conscious or subconscious. It allows us to gain a deeper understanding of the intertwining’s of our mind and what drives us to make decisions.

You Are What You Say You Are
Can you think back to a time in your life when you have felt your most confident self? When nothing could get in your way? You literally felt like superman! If you were to describe your physiology and state to a friend, what would you say?
Most of us would describe the state of confidence as standing tall with your shoulders drawn back, projecting your voice and walking with purpose. That physiology of course affects your internal thoughts and language. When you feel unstoppable and powerful – that is exactly what you are.
Essentially, your thoughts affect what you say; what you say becomes how you feel; how you feel impacts your physiology, which all together determines your state.
In contrast, when you are feeling upset and down, your physiology often matches your body language and state. Imagine if you began to tell yourself you will fail, there’s no point in trying, it’s too late and you are too old/ too young. What you focus on becomes your world, in turn breaking your positive and confident state. In other words, if you focus on everything you can’t do, don’t know, are not; there is no attention on what you do want.

Your conscious mind is the goal-setting part of your brain — the part that tells you, you want more money, a better relationship, or you want to be able to run 5km, or squeeze into those skinny jeans.
Your subconscious part is the goal achiever; the part that creates the tangible steps to allow you to earn more money, improve your relationships, train for a run or improve your relationship with food. If your conscious and subconscious parts of your brain are out of sync and disconnected, it is highly unlikely goals and outcomes are achieved.
